Can someone please explain this to me?

2003 - Universal Pictures releases "Hulk," directed by Oscar-nominated Ang Lee with a budget of at least $120 million.  It managed to gross about $250 million worldwide, but overall the whole project was considered an expensive misstep, with the main complaint being that the redesigned CGI Hulk turned off hardcore fans.

2008 - Universal will release "The Incredible Hulk," directed by a never-been-nominated-for-anything director named Louis, with a budget of now at least $130 million.

My question is this - if you were gonna spend another couple hundred million bucks making a movie you just made a few years ago that didn't work but you wanted another shot at it anyway, why would you make the new Hulk exactly like the old one??

Looks Like We Made It

Well friends, it's been just over 24 hours (!) since we started this whole blog thing together.  We've had some good times, some not so good times.  We've laughed together, we've cried together (thanks again, Malloy.  You're my rock.)  And as we look towards another several hours or more on this crazy rollercoaster we call life, it's important to take a look backwards.  Let's take inventory of just how far we've come.  Gosh, I remember that first day like it was yesterday...  

February 27, 2008.  It was a Wednesday, I think.  The world was in shambles and our country was divided.  Back then, Iran and North Korea were dead-set on nuclear weapons.  Russia was thumbing it's nose at us.  China was squeezing our economy into a massive recession.  I remember thinking: man, we're hosed.  And I wasn't alone.  Many thought our modern societies wouldn't survive, that our religious and cultural differences were just too great.  That we'd destroy ourselves and each other long before learning to coexist peacefully.  But, look at us - we're still here.  Still here!!  Still kickin!!  

And it... Looks like we made it after all.  

Ever been to Descanso Gardens?

It's the best kept secret 5 minutes up the 2 freeway, between Glendale and Pasadena.  If the Huntington Library is Disneyland, Descanso is more like Knott's Berry Farm.  On a simpler and much more digestible scale, Descanso boasts Japanese zen gardens, coi ponds, wooded walking paths, art galleries and bird sanctuaries.  A 5-acre rose garden is the main attraction during Spring and Summer months, featuring more than 3,000 rose varieties collected from centuries of international cultivation.  Having said that, there's also a little choo-choo train that you can ride and pretend you're a giant.

The cost of admission is pretty cheap ($7), but an annual membership is a steal ($60 for one adult, $70 for a couple!).  Basic membership gives you 364 days of admission, invitations to private events and discounts on year-round exercise and horticulture classes held on the garden grounds.  My favorite membership perk is early access an hour before opening (8-9am), when you can speed-walk, jog, or just meander with a cup of coffee through the morning dew-soaked forests before beginning your day.  Click here to visit their website.
